dissolves in water with the following reaction:

Mg ⇢ Mg2+ + 2e−

2H2O + 2e− ⇢ H2 + 2OH−

Mg2+ + 2OH− ⇢ Mg(OH)2

Mg + 2H2O ⇢ Mg(OH)2+ H2
